Treatment of a lake to reduce excess plant
growth. |
|
|
| Aquatic plants and algae blooms are the result of excess
nutrients in the water that have washed off the landscape.
Just a little nitrogen in our phosphate over-loaded lakes can
cause enormous growth. The sources of these excess
nutrients include over-fertilization of lawns and turfgrass,
agricultural run-off, and animal waste. The Lakes
Department utilizes multiple treatment products to control the
growth of algae and invasive plants in the lakes as well as on
land.
The following list includes brief descriptions of the
products and their uses here in the Lakes and Operations
Departments.

AQUATHOL K aquatic
herbicide
active ingredient: dipotassium salt of endothall at 40.3%
|
|
This contact herbicide is
a water-soluble salt and kills plants through absorption, but generally
leaves the roots intact. As a result, it needed to be reapplied
annually. It is short-acting and successful for spot treatments. |

AVAST! aquatic herbicide
active ingredient: Fluridone family: 1-methyl-3-phenyl-5-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-4(1H)-pyridinone
|
|
This chemical herbicide inhibits the
formation of carotene which prevents chlorophyll from functioning
properly and causes it to degrade in sunlight. This product is low
acting and it may be 6 to 12 weeks before the plants die and fall to the
sediment. |

AB Clearigate
herbicide
active ingredient: elemental copper at 3.825%
|
|
This herbicide is a
chelated copper formulation and works through contact absorption. There
are some risks to copper such as accumulation in the sediment that have
resulted in some states like Washington, to ban the use of copper
treatments.

This herbicide is a chelated copper
formulation and works through contact absorption. There are some
risks to copper such as accumulation in the sediment that have resulted

HABITAT herbicide
active ingredient: imazapyr: Imidazolinone family:
2-[4,5-dihydro-4-(1-methylethyl0-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-3-pyridinecarboxylic
acid, salt with 2-propanamine (1:1) |
|
This herbicide inhibits a
plant-specific enzyme which in turn causes the plant to stop growing and
dye as it exhausts its energy reserves. This herbicide is used in
the lakes to combat aquatic plants as well as along waterways and on
shorelines. |

Hydrothol 191 algaecide/herbicide
active ingredient: Mono (N,N-dimethylalkylamine) salt of endothall at
53.0%
|
|
This compound is a water-soluble, rapid
acting non-selective contact herbicide/algaecide. It does not
accumulate in the environment and rapidly breaks down. |

Copper Sulfate fine
crystals
active ingredient: Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate at 99.0%
|
|
This is another copper
product. |

PRENFISH TOXICANT
active ingredient: rotenone at 5%
|
|
This chemical is designed to kill fish.
It was used in 2009 to remove fish from Lake on the Green in preparation
for restocking in 2010. |

REWARD herbicide
active ingredient: Diquat dibromide; 6,7-dihydrodipyrido
(1,2-a:2',1'-c) pyrazinediium dibromide
|
|
This is a fast-acting,
non-selective contact herbicide which destroys the vegetative part of
the plant but does not kill the roots. Its typical use is for short
term, seasonal control of a variety of submersed aquatic plants. |

SONAR A.S. herbicide
active ingredient: Fluridone: 1-methyl-3phenyl-5-(3-(trifluoro-methyl)phenyl)-4(1H)-pyridinone
|
|
This is a slow-acting systemic herbicide
that provides good control of submersed plants where there is little
water movement and an extended time for the treatment. It is best used
to treat a whole-lake or isolated bay. |

active ingredient: Glyphosate: N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine at
28.3% |
|
This herbicide is systemic, broad spectrum
and is used to control floating-leaved plants like water lilies and
shoreline plants like purple loosestrife. It does not work on
underwater plants. |
